Glossary
Reference guide to all terms, abbreviations, and pattern codes used in Ashwa Guru.
Catalysts
Positive form angles — flags that suggest a horse is primed to perform. These codes appear in the Notes column of the Race Analysis tab.
Defeated Not Disgraced
Lost fighting or to a better horse — run has merit despite the result.
Early Fast Fraction
Horse burned energy near the front early in the race.
Key Race
Previous race that produced multiple subsequent winners — form from this race is reliable.
Lead by many Lengths
Went clear by a large margin.
Profile Play
Stalked the pace at important call points and faded before the winning post — horse to follow.
Sharp run After Layoff
Horse ran well first-up after a long break.
Stretch Run Extension
Covered enormous ground in the last furlong.
Sustained Stretch Run
Horse maintained strong momentum through the entire straight — not just a burst.
Turn Move Play
Move made around the turn while travelling wide.
Wide Out Play
Horse ran wide while up with the pace — used extra ground.
Excellent Last Fraction
Horse ran its fastest split in the final furlong — a strong finishing move.
Observations
Contextual notes on race circumstances, equipment changes, and bias effects. Use to interpret or discount a run.
Shoe Change: Aluminium → Steel
Switched to heavier steel shoes — usually negative.
Accelerated After Changing Leads
Horse switched legs mid-race and accelerated — shows athleticism and balance.
Age Group+
Horse running in an age group race today while last run was in open category.
Age Group−
Horse running in an open category while last run was in age group race.
Checked / Interfered
Horse was blocked, bumped, or denied a clear run — result is unreliable.
Class Down
Horse running in a lower class than its last run.
Class Up
Horse running in a higher class than its last run.
Front Bias Advantage
Horse benefitted from a track bias favouring front-runners on that day.
Front Bias Disadvantage
Horse was harmed by a front bias. Watch out for improvement when running on an unbiased track.
Fly Jump
Took a fly jump and lost ground.
First Time Blinkers
Horse wears blinkers for the first time — can sharpen focus but mostly negative.
Impressive Inner Sand Trackwork
Timed a notably fast workout on the inner sand track.
Keep An Eye
Horse showed something worth monitoring even if result didn't reflect it.
Mile+ Track Angle
Trackwork pattern over 1600m+.
Outstanding Outer Sand Trackwork
Timed a notably fast workout on the outer sand track.
Quick Repeat Winner
Won last run within 10 days — horse is in peak form and on a quick back-up.
Shoe Change: Steel → Aluminium
Switched to lighter aluminium shoes — usually positive.
Saddle Slipped
Equipment failure — disregard the performance entirely.
Same Day Last Year
Won around the same calendar date last year — seasonal peak may be recurring.
Slowly Off
Horse missed the start — ran the race with a self-imposed disadvantage.
Sustained Pace Bias Advantage
Horse benefitted from a track bias favouring closers.
Sustained Pace Bias Disadvantage
Horse was hurt by a track favouring closers. Watch out for improvement when running on a track with front bias.
Second Time Blinkers
Second run with blinkers — Positive.
Stumbled
Horse stumbled, likely at the start or during the race.
Sandwich
Older horse sandwiched between younger horses. To be followed in age-group races.
Terms to Handicap
Horse moving from a Terms race to a handicap race.
Top Jockey on Failed Favourite
Top jockey aboard a favourite that flopped last time out.
Top Jockey Single Mount
An elite jockey has only one ride on the card — likely a targeted engagement.
Unexplained Failure of Favourite
Favourite beaten by lengths greater than the race distance in furlongs.
Whip Lost
Jockey lost the whip during the race — finishing drive was compromised.
Well Rested Failed Favourite
Failed favourite returning after a break.
Running Styles
Displayed in the Pace Map tab. Derived from a horse's historical race commentaries and barrier position patterns.
Closer
Comes from off the pace. Needs a contested tempo and a clear run in the straight.
Early Pace (Leader)
Leads or disputes the lead from the barrier. Vulnerable in fast-tempo races.
Early to Prominent
Settles just off the pace in the first three. Gets the rails run if drawn inside.
Mid-Pack
Sits midfield and relies on a moderate tempo to get a run. Versatile.
Race Analysis Terms
Speed Rating Foundation
The average NSR from a horse's best three recent runs, used as the foundation for fair odds calculation. Can be manually adjusted in the Overrides section.
Bend Position
Position of the horse at the turn during the race.
Race Status: Low Confidence
Thin data, many debutants, or inconsistent form. Treat outputs with care.
Race-level Analytical Confidence
A percentage reflecting how complete and consistent the form data is for this race. High confidence means the model has sufficient data to differentiate runners. Low confidence signals a wide-open or data-thin race.
Days Since Last Run
Number of days between the horse's most recent run and today's race.
Early Speed Index
A composite score measuring how aggressively a horse contests the early part of a race, relative to the field.
Model-Derived Win Probability
The probability of winning expressed as decimal odds. Derived from NSR, form, pace, and trainer/jockey data. Represents what the price should be without bookmaker margin.
Lengths Behind Winner
The official margin in lengths that a horse finished behind the race winner. Used to calculate NSR adjustments.
Race Status: Maximum Confidence
Strong separation between runners, reliable form data throughout the field.
Normalised Speed Rating
A single number representing how fast a horse actually ran, adjusted for track, distance, going, and class. Higher is better. Enables comparison across different races and venues.
Official Rating
The handicapper's numerical assessment of a horse's ability, used for weight allocation in handicaps.
Market price longer than Fair Odds
The bookmaker is offering more than our model says the horse is worth. Represents potential value.
Penetrometer Reading
Official track going assessment — measures the firmness of the ground.
Race Status: Standard Confidence
Reasonable data but some uncertainty. Use alongside other angles.
Market price shorter than Fair Odds
The bookmaker's price is shorter than the model probability. The horse is overbet relative to its chance.
Trackwork Terms
The inner training track at the racecourse. Workouts here are generally more controlled and closely observed by trainers.
Optimum Body Weight — derived from past wins and close finishes. A useful fitness and condition benchmark.
The outer training track. Horses allowed on the outer sand are often closer to race fitness.
How fresh and primed the horse appears based on its workout pattern relative to race day. High readiness = well-tuned for this run.
A composite rating of the horse's recent trackwork quality, derived from timed gallops on inner and outer sand.
How the horse's trackwork rating compares to others in today's race field (standard deviations from field mean).
How today's trackwork compares to this horse's own recent workout history (standard deviations from its own baseline).
